Bugs in the rainforest

One of the most exciting programs offerred by Cascade Environmental Education Centre is our exploration of the interconnections between living things in the rainforest.

We explore the local creek, investigate the macroinvertebrates that live their and use the bugs we find as an indicator of water quality. We then build an interactive foodweb based on our findings!

About this excursion

During  this ½ day activity students examine the inter-relationships around them in the Beautiful Rainforest that surrounds Cascade EEC.

Excursion activities

After a quick safety brief and equipment check it’s off into the forest.

During the activities we will conduct a first-hand investigation of the aquatic macro-invertebrates that live in our waterways, investigate the inter-relationships between these bugs and us. We will utilise the data we gather to analyse the numbers of bugs we discover.

On return to the “Earth Lab”, we will explore how sensitive these bugs are to change and discuss what we can do to as environmental custodians.
